The What to Wear Dilema!

I'm not talking about my clothing choices here. That's a whole other story for another time! But, have you ever been unsure of what to wear, or what to dress your kids in for a photo shoot? I'm doing a shoot in a few weeks of 3 little kiddos. My client wanted suggestions on clothing for them so I went scouting. Now, little kids are easy. Honestly they look cute in anything! I've done shoots of my kids in crazy mis-matched, dirty play clothes... and they're adorable. Biased? eh.. maybe. So really, I don't feel a ton of pressure  on perfect dressing when it's kids! It does turn out amazing when outfits come together perfectly.. but they turn out pretty great none-the-less. The hard part comes when it comes to dressing ourselves for this sort of thing right?? Ha! Anyway... I digress!
First step - Figure out what item it is that you really want to incorporate, or find something you like that has multiple colors in it. One piece, for one person... It totally takes care of your color scheme for you! Then try basing other items off of that. Coordinate Schmoordinate! not Matchy Matchy!
Since we were starting from scratch and getting all new things - I went searching for something with a pattern or print that I could base the other outfits off of. I'll be honest - its easiest to do this for the girl of the group usually... not always. I found an adorable plaid shirt for my 2 year old boy last Fall for our photos, and that became the center piece that our other colors were based around.  I figured since I'd basically be sending my client suggestions - I would try and keep everything at one online store. I checked my go-to's: Target, Gap, Janie and Jack, Gymboree, Children's Place....andfinally landed at Old Navy. There were a lot of single pieces I liked at each store, but the coordinating 2 boys and 1 girl part proved to be best suited to Old Navy this time around. I found this shirt at OldNavy.com - and it was perfect! (A little Pantone Color of the 2016 slipped in here!)

Pink and Blue Floral Girls Top
Boy's Clothing Pantone Blue

After finding her shirt, I worked on the boys outfits. Toddlers and babies are easy, so I started with the older boy. One thing to keep in mind is texture and layers. So I went with layers for him... Notice how I'm pulling out the dark and light blues. This is the set I put together to send to my client... Obviously there are some choices there for her to choose from... but I'm basing the outfit for him, off of the colors in her shirt. I don't usually worry too much about the combining patterns thing, because I've seen some super cute shoots with stripes and plaids.. You just have to be careful. But stripes and florals are a total YES. :)

The little guy was easy - something about a button up with rolled up sleeves is adorable on a little one! Kept him simple, but I think he ties both of the other kids together well. Here is a case of options to coordinate, but not matching... I feel like its done well!

Little Miss ended up with some Navy leggings,  and we will throw in some accessories to brighten things up for the little miss some.. and bam!

Can't wait to see it all come together!

Back in action!

Wow, I haven't officially been working my photography business for almost a year - but as I'm compiling some photos to show you what I've been up to in the mean time, I realized I certainly stayed busy enough for being "out."  I seemed to take shoots on ANYWAY - despite not promoting at all. I kiiinda have a little problem with saying no ;) Life is going going going as always! We've moved (yes again, this time locally), we're expecting baby number 2 in June! And we've both been working full time! I recently went back down to working only 3 days a week at my "real job"  - to save on daycare and gas costs! And am now I'm using that time to take care of our home and coming back to my business!

Being in this profession can be rough in a small town, There are a lot of photographers out there... But! It'll be just fine :) I take pride in doing my best to create something with an extra "umph" and a bit of "something different." And those looking for what I offer, will be happy with that!

I believe it was last summer that I posted any full preview sets... (A couple weddings, and some senior portraits) So the photos to follow are a bit of everything since that time.

Don't forget to check out what I offer and what to expect for investment in the "Prices" tab. And enjoy staying up to date with me on by liking Valisa Henderson Photography on Facebook!

Little miss Lillian... So serious! In front of the camera at least! :) I had this adorable face featured before... also mostly serious though! Silly girl! She has such gorgeous eyes and lips though - the serious look works for her!It was great exploring Heritage Square with these three! Per Lillian - we pretty much followed the cats around the whole time :) Oooh! A hint of a smile! As I remind all clients: Please remember, you will receive a disc of your photos with no logo on them. Mia was a huge hit on my blog when we first met her! At 6 months? 8 months? Some where around there... she wasn't crawling.. She just sat in one place and was so happy! I saw her and her brother Damien again around her first birthday and she was on the move a bit more... This time though.. She was on the move for sure! Constant go go go!We had her brother and her baby cousin with us too! Fun shoot... went quickly! And I'm always glad to feature returning clients! <3 Enjoy your quick preview!

McKenna {Portraits}

McKenna! Oh McKenna! My "meant to be" meetup has blossomed into such a sweet friendship!McKenna was with her friends at Scottsdale Civic Center a year and a half ago now? They were taking pictures of each other... and I was sitting there waiting for a client, just people watching and waiting..... I spotted the 3 of them trying to get pictures not often getting one with all 3 in the picture, mostly taking pictures of each other... So after waiting 20 min for my client, and not hearing from her... I approached McKenna, Lilly and Sami, and offered to take some pictures of them - I did it with my camera, I told them I was expecting to do a shoot anyway so I might as well do it of them! :) I used my camera - but let them know I'd treat it like a regular mini shoot and edit them before I gave them the pictures - and then had a bit of fun w/ the three of them :) They all became my friends on FB and liked my photography page so they could see the pictures when I posted previews... and then - I stayed in touch with McKenna mostly - she seemed to be the one interested in the photography - she was the one with the camera, AND it turned out she lived less than 2 min from our apartments.  So it was easy to get her the disc...  she asked questions about photography - loved my help with her pictures for school.... eventually she began babysitting for us... :) She fit right in to our family!! <3 If you're a client - you probably recognize McKenna :) She comes with me on a lot of shoots to practice... her passion for life, happy fun loving attitude, and joy when taking pictures and "getting it right" is so sweet and contagious! I love having her around!! Today is her birthday (her "Sweet 16" I might add!)  so I thought I'd make sure to get her previews up from her shoot when I was back visiting in Phoenix  :) Happy Birthday McKenna!

Thursday Threads

My first post of Thursday Threads!! <3  So many people feel lost at what to wear for a photo shoot! This first Thursday Threads suggestion is geared toward a family shoot :) But can really be applied to other things as well I'm sure! Just trying to build a good base of suggestions for you to come to when you need inspiration when planning for your shoot :) One pointer many photographers will give you is this:  Not so Matchy Matchy! Coordinate! See what I mean? :)

3 Year old + Photoshoot....

= Ups and downs and everything in between :)I met Stacy (Mom) at the Hissyfits Hullabaloo craft fair in November... She seemed to be mostly attracted to the idea that I give copyright and a disc of all your images instead of leaving it up to the client to buy my photos :) One thing I stand quite proudly on with my business.  After a few reschedulings... Sicknesses and such between us... We finally got to meet up for a shoot! Little Miss Delaney was the star of the show here.... And I was excited to see how happy and peppy she was coming off the playground when I arrived. But when I got the camera in her face... um.. She changed her mind... which you'll notice.. and I learned... she does a lot. At least this day! We started with some whole family pictures... Grandma, Uncle Jason, Mommy - and Delaney... She wasn't so excited.

She needed some talking and joking.... She certainly didn't the idea of my crab (Preston, my lens buddy), camera  and I coming closer... But we started seeing if she thought Crab's said... Meow.. or Woof Woof... Or Moo.... She thought we were silly :) A little cuddle and play with mom seemed like it might work to really brighten her up again... But not for long... even with an attempt at swinging! Time to eat! That should help.... I let them do their thing and I snuck around a little... Look what a little food did! haha... I love her look in this photo... Shes not so sure why Grandma is in the waggon :)

Havin a good 'ole time! This is the smile I KNEW was in there! Peek-a-boo!She decided at one point in there that she was ready to go home... We headed over to see the train... She so wanted to ride! (That's a silly band in her hand... I was so afraid it was going to snap! AH!) Playin on the tracks... We're going to ride it!!! So. So. Excited. No more please... Let's go! Such JOY!

We're on the TRAIN!This photo makes me squeal inside a little... :DWe got off... She was done. Spent. Time to go home!

Hope you all enjoyed! With the down moments, to be honest.. I was a little concerned that I might not have as many good photos as I like to have. But I was so pleasantly surprised! She is so photogenic and certainly agrees with the camera... even if she didn't want to. I had a REALLY hard time choosing photos for the preveiws... because initially when I picked the ones I wanted to use.. I had close to 50! So I had to really cut it down. I just love the story they tell!!

:)
