Learning...

why?I'm always learning... So much of my character building comes from my darling daughter. I read this post today: From a blog I found called hands free mama... And if you take the time to read the post I linked to - you'll understand and really see the reason for this post... As I was reading, my 4 year old was asking one of those questions 4 year olds are infamous for.... Something I don't even know how to answer or even know why she's asking it. To be honest - I don't even remember what it was, knew it would be followed up with a "why" or a "how" and was just brushing it off with the usual, "I don't know Brooke." She's a pretty good sport about being brushed off... Usually. How sad is that?! So as I finished the article I looked at her... And tried to really look at her. She was busy trying on some hand-me-downs we just got from a friend. And she was working on unbuttoning her dress so she could get it off....The kind that has 3 little buttons in the front that do not need to be unbuttoned. They're really just there for looks. I started to explain that to her - and then I thought about the article I just read. And thought about how this girl takes forever too.... Like the girl in the blog. But it's because a button is to be unbuttoned and re-buttoned. A pocket must have something in it. The shirt she put on after the dress had buttons too and sure enough- she unbuttoned them all to put it on- then buttoned them all up. And then filled her decorative pocket up with small toys. Oh. My. Word. I don't know why this drives me so crazy.

20131019-161937.jpg But this article made me sit back and just watch her. I know she's only this age for so long... We have a lot going on in life right now and I forget to just let her be 4. I can learn a lot from the way she processes and looks at things, and she can learn so much because of how inquisitive she is..... if I just answer her questions nicely. So I grabbed my camera... And took a picture of each of my little ones just doing their own thing... She was now putting on the hand-me-down rain jacket.. Because, well, Why not?!

20131019-162413.jpg

I need to step back sometimes and ask questions, take more "real" photographs of my kids! Button things because they have buttons and carry things in pockets because I can... But in applying that to me more - hold my daughters hand because she's 4... And loves it when I do. Answer questions because they're questions and can be answered... Even if they are followed with "why?"

Grant and Lila! {Child Portraiture}

Sweet brother and sister duo here! <3 We met early the morning before I left town... and boy it was nice to get out and get a shoot done before it warmed up! I some how lucked out during my visit to Phoenix!  Smack-dab-in-the-middle-of June it was still cooler than 85 or so in the mornings. So the morning air and light was awesome :)  Apparently Kacie brings the kiddos here often, so Grant was right at home, running around - putting on shows and such... letting us know where to go next ;) It was great! They are such great kiddos! We were done with the mandatory shots we needed to get within the first 20 min! Easy Peasy! Everything after that was simple explore and capture! Which often works out quite well with little ones :)We had a great time! Enjoy the previews!! Don't forget to like Valisa Henderson Photography if you've spotted this because someone you know is tagged. Clients: Feel free to tag, use as profile pictures, share, and show off your photos. {A Shot of Yeager} Phoenix Family Photographer

The Yeager family! Christina is the photographer over at A Shot of Yaeger and contacted me when she heard I was coming to Phoenix. Of course, I know how she feels! The WHOLE family (including her) in front of the camera is a rare occasion :)I was honored to capture this beautiful family! She has the clothing "what to wear" coordination down for sure! And they are all adorable! I loved our evening together!!

And of course, a portrait of JUST the photographer :) As I remind all clients: Please remember, you will receive a disc of your photos with no logo on them. {N Family} Phoenix Family and Child Photograhy

Little miss Lillian... So serious! In front of the camera at least! :) I had this adorable face featured before... also mostly serious though! Silly girl! She has such gorgeous eyes and lips though - the serious look works for her!It was great exploring Heritage Square with these three! Per Lillian - we pretty much followed the cats around the whole time :) Oooh! A hint of a smile! As I remind all clients: Please remember, you will receive a disc of your photos with no logo on them. Vargas Fam {Family and Child Portraits}

I certainly had a hard time choosing previews for this one! :) Especially because Lilly had some awesome portraits :) Can't wait to share them all with you guys!!This is also a 3rd go around for this family :) Our first shoot was when Vanessa was pregnant with Azalea, second was her newborn shoot.. :) Now look at them! <3 so cute!! We had a great shoot!! As I remind all clients: Please remember, you will receive a disc of your photos with no logo on them. Mia returns! With Brother and cousin :)

Mia was a huge hit on my blog when we first met her! At 6 months? 8 months? Some where around there... she wasn't crawling.. She just sat in one place and was so happy! I saw her and her brother Damien again around her first birthday and she was on the move a bit more... This time though.. She was on the move for sure! Constant go go go!We had her brother and her baby cousin with us too! Fun shoot... went quickly! And I'm always glad to feature returning clients! <3 Enjoy your quick preview!

Tasha and Ben {Mommy and Me Portraits}

I met Tasha when she was around 12 I think? :) I was just 17 or 18 myself... helping out with the Jr. High Youth at the church we went to :)Now she has little Ben! <3 Time flies!! He was so cute! A quick busy little guy - but so cute!! Its probably a good thing we just did a mini shoot ;) His still-ness didn't seem to last long! Granted I think it was 105 outside :) As I remind all clients: Please remember, you will receive a disc of your photos with no logo on them. McKenna {Portraits}

McKenna! Oh McKenna! My "meant to be" meetup has blossomed into such a sweet friendship!McKenna was with her friends at Scottsdale Civic Center a year and a half ago now? They were taking pictures of each other... and I was sitting there waiting for a client, just people watching and waiting..... I spotted the 3 of them trying to get pictures not often getting one with all 3 in the picture, mostly taking pictures of each other... So after waiting 20 min for my client, and not hearing from her... I approached McKenna, Lilly and Sami, and offered to take some pictures of them - I did it with my camera, I told them I was expecting to do a shoot anyway so I might as well do it of them! :) I used my camera - but let them know I'd treat it like a regular mini shoot and edit them before I gave them the pictures - and then had a bit of fun w/ the three of them :) They all became my friends on FB and liked my photography page so they could see the pictures when I posted previews... and then - I stayed in touch with McKenna mostly - she seemed to be the one interested in the photography - she was the one with the camera, AND it turned out she lived less than 2 min from our apartments.  So it was easy to get her the disc...  she asked questions about photography - loved my help with her pictures for school.... eventually she began babysitting for us... :) She fit right in to our family!! <3 If you're a client - you probably recognize McKenna :) She comes with me on a lot of shoots to practice... her passion for life, happy fun loving attitude, and joy when taking pictures and "getting it right" is so sweet and contagious! I love having her around!! Today is her birthday (her "Sweet 16" I might add!)  so I thought I'd make sure to get her previews up from her shoot when I was back visiting in Phoenix  :) Happy Birthday McKenna!

McColl Kids!

My first shoot of the phoenix trip!I've been honored to have these kiddos in front of the camera quite a few times! Faith has always been ready and willing to smile and pose!  Ethan took a bit more convincing... This time, was fabulous though! I did some shots of Faith, the avid dancer, in some dance move/poses... which was fun :) Something I haven't really done before - I love that you can see how much she loves it!  And then did some portraits of Ethan.. OH my heart. He warmed right on up this time! May have helped that he had just seen me a week or two before at his Aunty's wedding :) Anyway - wanted to share on the blog!! <3

Welcome Trenton!

I had the privilege of capturing this precious family with their new adorable addition, Trenton. Welcome to the world baby Trenton! At just 12 days new, he made such a cute model! I especially loved all his hair!! Once asleep - this little guy did great! He made me work for these pictures, I'll wont lie ;) Bit of a light sleeper! We had to keep it simple for this sweet boy :) But its okay, he worked it! <3 It is way too easy to fall in love with babies! Just sayin!

Oh So Posh

Can't tell you how inspiring Lidia with Oh So Posh Photography is....She is one of the most real and inspiring "big names" in the blogging slash Facebook world of photographers....  She has over 40,000 fans on Facebook and she manages to stay real, personal and connected. Tons of photographers know of her because of the striking photos and edits she produces! She sells her Photoshop actions and I'm a new owner of them :) I knew I'd have a learning curve...I struggled at first because I edit 95% in Lightroom .. I'm SO comfortable with my work flow in LR and only dabble in CS5 when I need to... And I'm cool with using it for Logos or design stuff.. but anyway - blah blah - I'm going to change that thanks to Lidia and her awesome actions! I found my niche when playing with the actions... needless to say - I'm really excited.... I have much more "playing" and practicing to do... but I LOVE this first result! Here is a before and after.... The before is SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera)- My original edit of this (the one delivered to my client) wasn't too far off of this... simply because I really loved the SOOC (Loving SOOC is what I work towards... And I accomplished that in this)... so it was enhanced a just little upped the blacks,  popped the color and contrast a little... If I had nothing else going on in my life I"d sit down and re-edit from all my past shoots! <3 haha. Anyway - on with the show! This was a simple combo of Carnival Lights and Moroccan Spice and i tweaked some parts of it - Its not extravagant... nothing looks fake or over done.... It just has SUCH a gorgeous glow and pop to it! Plus it helps that Aly is BEAUTIFUL!

PS - Here is a Plug!  Aly is a 2012 Senior graduating this year <3 She was going to be a 2012 senior rep but because we moved back to this area after school started, and didn't even get this shoot in until late in the year - pretty much all her friends had their Senior Pictures done already...  I was late to the Senior Pictures game this year! But I'm getting an early start for 2013 seniors!!! If you're interested in being a 2013 Senior Rep - Click here to Fill out the Senior Rep Application! You can get your Sr Pics for Free as well as earn awesome prizes! I'll be announcing the 4 reps April 18th!

Snow Day!

Lots going on today - Busy cleaning up, packing up... getting ready to head out of town for the weekend... but with the fresh layer of snow - Brooke had to go play in it before our day takes off! Jammies, and all :) Warm socks, Leg warmers, Boots and mittens... can't forget the hat!! Mind you this is RIGHT after she woke up!Brooke- WAIT! Where's dad? me - He's at work silly! Brooke- We can't go play in the snow without dad. (said - very matter of factly.. Then thinks...).... But... I can just go make footprints and jump on my trampoline! (hands up... very sure of her statement!)

Such a little personality, this one!

She took it upon herself to make it "her job" ("its just my job mom") to sweep off the trampoline and slide, as well as the bags of leaves in the corner of the yard.

I so enjoy these moments! <3

Where have I been??

EVERYWHERE! I've been back to Phoenix mostly though! I have a LOT of editing to catch up on - a couple old shoots that I never finished due to my trip BACK to Phoenix shortly after moving into our new house... *sigh* Busy Busy..So before I delve into finishing those up - I picked 2 to 3 previews from each shoot I did while in Phoenix to hold some of you over :) So here they are! Lots more to come, *probably* more previews of each session will be up in the coming weeks: Enjoy! I love that I have so many returning faces in this set of shoots!! <3 feeling the love from my clients for sure!

Anyone Remember the sleepy newborn baby boy with the blue beanie on? Here he is again 6 months later!

Next is the quickest turn around client I've ever had! My last post was of Mia! This is her birthday shoot and her big brother, Damien who is quite the cutie himself! ;) ! The cake shes enjoying in the last picture is precious! She kept having fits of excitement when the sugar finally kicked in:

Next: My fam :D My sister DeAnna and her family :) They recently moved out of their downtown historic home into a house with lots of room outside! They've got horses, chickens, a dog, a bearded dragon, and a bird! Phew.. along with the occasional wild life visitors! They're certainly embracing their life in the "Country" ;)

A special congratulations to Melissa and Chris! The main reason why this trip was necessary! 9.10.11 marked a special day for these two! And I was so excited to be a part of it!! Can't wait to share more!

Their wedding party was a lot of fun!! Love this shot because it displays the personality of the group so well!! <3 And my favorite shot of the day... I'm pretty sure.. Is actually credit of my second shooter McKenna!! Thanks for helpin out girl!! This shot is seriously one of my favorites out of ALL of them! And Melissa - YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL! Nicole.. Regarding my move to California...I think is one of the most disappointed clients :) She was quite excited to do newborn shots when her little one comes along.. Buuut - we did get a maternity shoot in - Which I was SO happy with!! Can't wait to share more of those too :D So many good shots - the location and the clouds were working so well for me that day - that I brought my next client/friend :D to the same place!! <3 Carrie :D Can't wait for that special boy #2 to be born!! They've been through a lot! And he will be making his appearance by scheduled c-section - Which is when my NEXT trip to Phoenix is being based around :) *end of October* We can only Hope that ^Nicole's^ Baby comes early and she can still get a newborn shoot in while I'm there :)

AHH Love these two! Got a TON of amazing shots of this brother/sister combo! <3 Thanks Melissa for letting me capture your kiddos! Middle of the day on my next to last day in Phoenix... Carrie and I entered into an awesome experiment!! Underwater Maternity.. Oh. My. Word! AMAZING. A TON of work... for both of us... But I hope to get better at this!! CAN NOT WAIT for a chance to do a full blog post on this to share more! Finally! Night before I left I finished up my shoots :) You may recognize these 3 cuties!

Busy Bee!

Thats me! Oi! So busy! This move is coming up in 1 week! And we are not even close to being done with packing! Its barely started! PLUS I'm trying to fit some shoots in before I go, and would LIKE to get all the editing done before I leave.. *sigh* I will say though - having this established clientele here is going to make visiting here financed by photo-shoots much easier than visiting other places I've been and tried to finance with shoots... Elsewhere I have some interest... and generally rely on Facebook *marketing* and on others to really do the drumming up for me...  But here, I already have clientele... only a years worth but its still more than need-to-be-drummed-up type clientele. And with Fall coming up - a lot of people are ready for their second (or third or fourth!!) go-round with me... with the news of moving - I have had a lot of  "OH NO! I wanted to get a shoot in with you before the holidays..." or "But I'm having a baby! You need to be here!"  or "Now I have to find a new photographer..."It feels SO wonderful to see and hear elation when I say "But I'm going to be here and scheduling shoots for a week in September, A week at the end of October, and most likely a week at the end of January 2012. "

So in the next few days I will be sitting down scheduling shoots for A week (dates not exactly nailed down yet) surrounding the weekend of September 10th And for a week surrounding October 28th

I'll have to take non-refundable deposits, which is not what I normally do... But I'll need to purchase my air-fair with the money I make from these shoots... There for - with the way plane tickets work... will need to be in my hand BEFORE the shoot! :) So keep this in mind!! And contact me if you're interested in a shoot for September or October! I already have a TON of requests... Just have to get the dates nailed down - so if you want a spot... let me know!

Anyway - onto the REASON for this blog! To share with you what kept me busy yesterday morning! (and tonight with a little editing :) In the heat of the AZ morning... 2 shoots!!

Happy Happy 2 year old!! She wore herself out quick though! It was so Hot!!

^One of my FAVORITES for sure! Her smile.. her laugh - her eyes.. GAH shes so cute!

And across town to a maternity shoot!! (The mom-to-be is a friend I met ONLINE... crazy huh? lol ;) I love Baby Gaga... just FYI)

Vanessa - Seriously - I think you look like Christina Ricci!

Precious Precious!!

Thanks for looking!! :D

Pretty in Pink! Precious in Purple!

Oh. My. Word.My latest photo subject: Mia {9MonthsYoung} Level of adorableness: Off the charts... I haven't blogged in FOREVER... And my latest client doesn't have a facebook (which is where most of my clients get their first peak at their portraits...)- SO I figured her shoot was the perfect one to jump back into blogging... Or {try} to. For the first time, I had a client come to MY house... Oh how I wish I had a studio for baby shoots! [The pull back shot of Keri*Meyers's studio makes me drool... I prefer outdoor stuff once little ones are walking... but pre-walking. ~Newborns especially of course~ .. inside in a studio works so so well! And is SO SO fun! I wish I had the prop collection, the natural light... the dedicated space... oi! Someday! :).. ok ... anyway... back on track....]

Though - Our house is in disarray due to the beginnings of unorganized house turning in to an {attempted} organized packed-up house, for  {hopefully} an organized move... Our patio with my backdrop stuff all set up turned out to be the PERFECT venue for my shoot with Miss Mia!

I've done shoots with Brooke out there before, and my little buddy Natalie :) And the lighting is always amazing! We have no direct sun... but the building is white and light blue... and we're on the 4th floor with no real shadowy obstructions.. :)

PLUS Just barely Pre-Crawling is awesome too because they're immobilized pretty much! But happy enough sitting and staring at you! This girl has to-die for big brown glassy eyes and with the awesome light outside... they were glistening!! :) You'll see what I mean...!

Without Further ado.... Here is the sneak peak!

Now there you have it!! A "handful" of previews... that I generally promise.. turned into a lot more!  But it really is just a small percentage of all the awesome shots she allowed me to take! :D I must give a shout out to my dear Kenna! McKenna loves photography, has a brand new Canon in her hands, and loves coming to shoots with me! SO I have to brag on her a bit and showcase a few of her super cute captures!!

*Her Photos | My Edits*

*Special Thanks to LoveBbyCarrie for the super cute purple and white boutique bow :) {which I WILL be brining you $ for next time I see you btw!} And to McKenna of course for second shooting! You're a rising star my love!

New Set up!

So I've had my backdrop stand for a while... and have been dying to get some flooring for a very specific look I'm COPYING from my friend Rose :) She does little shoots like this - mostly of her precious daughter Jayley :) That I see and just LOVE all the time...Finally got my flooring and then our porch, which is the best place size and lighting wise to set it up on was wet from rain..... and we're on the fourth floor and anything we sluff off goes right into 3 other porches so i try not to do that. :) Today there was only a little bit of wetness left so i dried it all up - cleaned the space and set up! Brooke was willing to model because I told her i'd give her Heart sprinkles, a vitamin.. and/or raisins. She opted for the vitamin and heart sprinkles then when i was done with the shoot - she said that we weren't done because she was ready for raisins! lol. usually I don't give into such cute manipulation BUT she was willing to play and model for me a little more :) SO I went for it! I'm so excited to share what came out of it! Can't wait to use this on some babies!! :D Enjoy!
