Developing some Wanderlust

Were you someone who grew up with a home base? Do you have somewhere that you go back to that is "home?"  I have an area... but not a structure. Scott Valley feels like "home." As does Northern California in general.   As a kid who mostly "traveled" just up and down I-5 (Medford to Mexico was my range...) I grew up wanting to do the whole road-trip-across-the-country" thing. Once I hit middle school age and was pretty stationary in one area, I never ached to get out of Siskiyou County for good though (like so many other classmates of mine did. Every other Etna High Senior seemed to be dying to get out of town asap!) because I had lived in the city already, and I enjoyed being settled in our safe little Scott Valley. Security... I guess that's all I ever really felt like I needed. HASHTAG:WOMEN lol right?  Thankfully, I find peace in knowing that God

But now - I've gone from one end of the country, and back again... a few times, Lived from California to Florida and a handful of places in between, and enjoyed all of the new places for sure. But have ALWAYS hated the leaving! Do you know the feeling of the slight social anxiety that comes with having to build a new network? Eeshk. Not my favorite.  Aside from the last 3 years... I think that most of my life I've moved every other year.  Whether it was same town and just from house to house or to a different town, different county or different state... packing up, unsettling, and re-settling has been a part of my life... For-Eevv-Eerrr.   And I have always loved that. And I have always not-loved that too... Forgive my awkwardness. Pardon my confusing tone. I'm an INFP and the struggle is real.  (Total side note here - but you know that saying, "I'm not a night-owl... I'm not an early-bird... I'm some sort of exhausted pigeon."?? HAHA! I feel like that is me with anything! - So the moving all over going from place to place, loving it, hating it, desiring being settled, but always having wanted to travel the country..? Yeah.. I'm an in-between sort of person. Don't ask me to pick a favorite. Ever. Of anything.) One of the biggest life lessons that God has used all of this for me is to be present. To soak life up here and now.

Did you go through a season, maybe early college years, where you loved what you were doing, your life season, the excitement of your future, but at the same time... struggled because you didn't feel like you had a home base? *Emoji girl hand raise* Yes!! Me too!  and that was soo un-nerving. All of the THINGS that couldn't fit with me were in storage in various states (Arizona, Tennessee, Florida and California), and the things that I wanted with me fit into a couple of suitcases. MAN, that was a lot of work toting and loading those all over! lol. But those years where you're not a care-free high school kid anymore, and you don't totally feel like you're capable of adulting completely yet... are confusing, and emotional, while mixed with so much reward and fun memories.  *see what I mean?*

Through ALL of that... I've always and forever, wanted to have a beautiful place to land. I've dreamt of having a "homestead" that my kids grow up in and never have to leave until it's time. One that they can come home to through their awkward exhausted pigeon stages and feel secure, like they know where they belong. Where they can look at a certain hallway or doorstep and be flooded with memories from most any time in their life.   So that is ultimate goal number one. A forever home.

BUUUTTT are you still wondering if we're going to get to the wanderlust part? Here we go. Hi, I'm Valisa, I'm a photographer and I'm super settled and don't want to leave but I am addicted to the idea of traveling the country in an RV and homeschooling my kids on the road for a year or two. Bouncing the country from state parks, to towns our friends and family live in that we rarely get to see.

See what I mean about the confusing thing? I'm a big ole walking contradiction.  I guess it comes with the desire to connect to those I'm close with... And after having lived in a few different states... I've got loved ones all over the place that I do NOT get to see nearly enough. AND... I want my kids to get to know some fun things about this beautiful country we live in. To really explore and learn... to enjoy the company, and glean from the wisdom of godly people we love that SHOULD be big influences in their lives but that live too far away.

So there you have it. Ultimate Goal Number 2 - Eventually... I want to travel. I want to *safely* throw my kids in an RV. And for a year or two live in state parks, giving my kids an enriching start to life... and I want to do it while they're still young enough to WANT to be with me in close quarters for long periods of time... so that it's me that has to battle the going crazy part... instead of them. lol.... Maybe at some point I'll be able to take my photography business on the road, and come be able to photograph all of you sweet friends that aren't local to Nor Cal and Southern Oregon areas, and that I haven't seen in ... FAR too long.

Do you relate to this... ooooorrrrr do you think I'm crazy? Haha you're free to tell me either! Start the conversation below: Comment below with your thoughts! And if you're someone not-local to me... how cool would it be? You'd have to get your friends on board to booking shoots and then I could pretty much plan to come to you right? Check out Knorpp and South! They do it, and do it WELL (with 9 children mind you).

Coming to Visit!!!

{B} Family Photos!

Ooooh my last FL shoot! A few previews for them! Isabella - Ooooh Isabella!! She is SUCH a little ham! I was wondering if she was going to cooperate well because that girl! haha She thinks its funny to ignore some people on purpose... luckily she thought I was pretty fun popping out from behind my camera so she did great! Natasha and Miguel are old friends and I LOVED capturing them yet again! <3 Miss these dear friends already! Image

Grant and Lila! {Child Portraiture}

Sweet brother and sister duo here! <3 We met early the morning before I left town... and boy it was nice to get out and get a shoot done before it warmed up! I some how lucked out during my visit to Phoenix!  Smack-dab-in-the-middle-of June it was still cooler than 85 or so in the mornings. So the morning air and light was awesome :)  Apparently Kacie brings the kiddos here often, so Grant was right at home, running around - putting on shows and such... letting us know where to go next ;) It was great! They are such great kiddos! We were done with the mandatory shots we needed to get within the first 20 min! Easy Peasy! Everything after that was simple explore and capture! Which often works out quite well with little ones :)We had a great time! Enjoy the previews!! Don't forget to like Valisa Henderson Photography if you've spotted this because someone you know is tagged. Clients: Feel free to tag, use as profile pictures, share, and show off your photos. Remember not to remove any logos, edit, crop or alter this photo in any way.

Joe, Julie, Quinn and Declan {Phoenix Family and Child Photography}

Special family in my heart for sure! I used to watch Quinn during the day for a while when we lived in Phoenix - she and Brooke (my daughter) are only a week apart ;) it was a trying time some days - as watching toddlers learning to share and play together can be... but oh so fun :) We miss them terribly and hate that we aren't around to see Declan more! But it was awesome to meet him and see them all again!Enjoy the previews! <3 As I remind all clients: Please remember, you will receive a disc of your photos with no logo on them. Please do not crop out or hide logos (even when using as a profile picture on Facebook). Feel free to share these pictures, the blog post, etc… These are meant to hold you over while waiting for your disc – Encouraged use: sharing, using as profile pictures, tagging friends.. etc

I love my clients!

I'm busy getting a list of bookings together for my next Phoenix trip, and getting

Excited about the repeat clients that make these trips possible! I'll be booked up with clients with babies I've had the privelage of shooting  since before they were born! Plus more kiddos, families, and couples. Feeling so blessed to have clients that love me back enough to trust me  with capturing thier memories even tho I'm only in Phoenix once or twice a year!

Where have I been??

EVERYWHERE! I've been back to Phoenix mostly though! I have a LOT of editing to catch up on - a couple old shoots that I never finished due to my trip BACK to Phoenix shortly after moving into our new house... *sigh* Busy Busy..So before I delve into finishing those up - I picked 2 to 3 previews from each shoot I did while in Phoenix to hold some of you over :) So here they are! Lots more to come, *probably* more previews of each session will be up in the coming weeks: Enjoy! I love that I have so many returning faces in this set of shoots!! <3 feeling the love from my clients for sure!

Anyone Remember the sleepy newborn baby boy with the blue beanie on? Here he is again 6 months later!

Next is the quickest turn around client I've ever had! My last post was of Mia! This is her birthday shoot and her big brother, Damien who is quite the cutie himself! ;) ! The cake shes enjoying in the last picture is precious! She kept having fits of excitement when the sugar finally kicked in:

Next: My fam :D My sister DeAnna and her family :) They recently moved out of their downtown historic home into a house with lots of room outside! They've got horses, chickens, a dog, a bearded dragon, and a bird! Phew.. along with the occasional wild life visitors! They're certainly embracing their life in the "Country" ;)

A special congratulations to Melissa and Chris! The main reason why this trip was necessary! 9.10.11 marked a special day for these two! And I was so excited to be a part of it!! Can't wait to share more!

Their wedding party was a lot of fun!! Love this shot because it displays the personality of the group so well!! <3 And my favorite shot of the day... I'm pretty sure.. Is actually credit of my second shooter McKenna!! Thanks for helpin out girl!! This shot is seriously one of my favorites out of ALL of them! And Melissa - YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL! Nicole.. Regarding my move to California...I think is one of the most disappointed clients :) She was quite excited to do newborn shots when her little one comes along.. Buuut - we did get a maternity shoot in - Which I was SO happy with!! Can't wait to share more of those too :D So many good shots - the location and the clouds were working so well for me that day - that I brought my next client/friend :D to the same place!! <3 Carrie :D Can't wait for that special boy #2 to be born!! They've been through a lot! And he will be making his appearance by scheduled c-section - Which is when my NEXT trip to Phoenix is being based around :) *end of October* We can only Hope that ^Nicole's^ Baby comes early and she can still get a newborn shoot in while I'm there :)

AHH Love these two! Got a TON of amazing shots of this brother/sister combo! <3 Thanks Melissa for letting me capture your kiddos! Middle of the day on my next to last day in Phoenix... Carrie and I entered into an awesome experiment!! Underwater Maternity.. Oh. My. Word! AMAZING. A TON of work... for both of us... But I hope to get better at this!! CAN NOT WAIT for a chance to do a full blog post on this to share more! Finally! Night before I left I finished up my shoots :) You may recognize these 3 cuties!

Busy Bee!

Thats me! Oi! So busy! This move is coming up in 1 week! And we are not even close to being done with packing! Its barely started! PLUS I'm trying to fit some shoots in before I go, and would LIKE to get all the editing done before I leave.. *sigh* I will say though - having this established clientele here is going to make visiting here financed by photo-shoots much easier than visiting other places I've been and tried to finance with shoots... Elsewhere I have some interest... and generally rely on Facebook *marketing* and on others to really do the drumming up for me...  But here, I already have clientele... only a years worth but its still more than need-to-be-drummed-up type clientele. And with Fall coming up - a lot of people are ready for their second (or third or fourth!!) go-round with me... with the news of moving - I have had a lot of  "OH NO! I wanted to get a shoot in with you before the holidays..." or "But I'm having a baby! You need to be here!"  or "Now I have to find a new photographer..."It feels SO wonderful to see and hear elation when I say "But I'm going to be here and scheduling shoots for a week in September, A week at the end of October, and most likely a week at the end of January 2012. "

So in the next few days I will be sitting down scheduling shoots for A week (dates not exactly nailed down yet) surrounding the weekend of September 10th And for a week surrounding October 28th

I'll have to take non-refundable deposits, which is not what I normally do... But I'll need to purchase my air-fair with the money I make from these shoots... There for - with the way plane tickets work... will need to be in my hand BEFORE the shoot! :) So keep this in mind!! And contact me if you're interested in a shoot for September or October! I already have a TON of requests... Just have to get the dates nailed down - so if you want a spot... let me know!

Anyway - onto the REASON for this blog! To share with you what kept me busy yesterday morning! (and tonight with a little editing :) In the heat of the AZ morning... 2 shoots!!

Happy Happy 2 year old!! She wore herself out quick though! It was so Hot!!

^One of my FAVORITES for sure! Her smile.. her laugh - her eyes.. GAH shes so cute!

And across town to a maternity shoot!! (The mom-to-be is a friend I met ONLINE... crazy huh? lol ;) I love Baby Gaga... just FYI)

Vanessa - Seriously - I think you look like Christina Ricci!

Precious Precious!!

Thanks for looking!! :D
